Still in the race

How much time should I be spending searching for new papers? Reading the papers I already have? Ignoring papers and thinking up new questions and experiments? Thinking through the questions and experiments I already have? Programming or otherwise setting up the experiments I already have? When should a project be abandoned?

I have no idea.

But I’ve been discussing these issues with my advisor and my peers, and I’m waking up most days and thinking to myself, “As long as I go and make an effort today, then I’m still in the race.”

Never give up.

But brief surrender can be beneficial.
